promotion at Yahoo!7, and friends on the catwalk again [May. 8th, 2006|09:37 am]

[mood |accomplishedaccomplished]

On friday I got a promotion - from Web Developer to Web Developer Manager! Got a team and everything :-) Just thought I'd note that here in case I ever need to know when I started... I've not been using my journal much in the year since I started at Yahoo! - not because Yahoo! don't allow their staff to blog (they do) i's just easier not to blog about work to avoid accidently writing about something that IS confidential... and really, when you're not blogging at work you tend to forget to blog about anything else too. Like Sydney Fashion week the other week, when my up-and-coming fashion-designer friends High Tea with Mrs Woo had their second year putting their stuff up on the catwalk, this time standing out from the crowd with the ultra-gravely sound of Tom Waits and the models sitting and reading or walking and carrying some books of mine I'd given them: the racey and racist Fu-Manchu books by Sax Rohmer. Ro said she wanted to read them (rather against my advice, they're incredibly racist towards the chinese, and she's... chinese), but no she puts them up there with her clothing at an international fashion event! Yikes! Well, I suppose it's east-meets-west and their stuff is east-meets-west, but really, not quite the same thing at all. Bloody laughed though :-D

Here's Garfield in english, and here's the same Garfield in spanish.

Why the radically different colouration? All that needs to change is the text, not even the speech-bubble changes size

hah - we've just had a win as 'best entertainment site' in Australia's 2005 NetGuide Awards for our music site. I did the homepage, the gig-guide sub-property and various other bits like this, including all the advertiser-rethemings of our homepage.

In other, rather late, news - launched phase 2 of the Dancing with the Stars TV minisite last week, more than doubling it's content... that navigation is packed!

Yahoo!7 goes live! Shitloads of work by me! [Jan. 30th, 2006|11:05 am]

It is a MASSIVE day for me today!

Last month, while I was on a business trip to Yahoo UK, I found out that Yahoo! Australia & NZ was to be no more - we, the australian branch of yahoo, were merging with Channel 7, a free-to-air TV station in Australia much like ITV or Ch4.

As a result: shitloads of work. I've worked the last 2 weekends and been in the office regularly until 3am, in order to bring you today:

The new Yahoo!7 homepage

The new Travel site

The new LOST minisite

The new Desperate Housewives minisite

The new Widgets minisite

and lastly and definitely not leastly, the new Universal Header - seen at the top of almost every single page of Yahoo in Australia - that's tens of thousands of pages! Like at the top of this page - the silver thing with the logo beneath it, the search box on the right.

Windows System Restore is stupid - I'm trying to get to a point before I installed the Yahoo! Toolbar (today), and I've tried 8 prior 'Restore Points' through the last fortnight (some of them software installs) and every damn time it says it can't do it. Why are there 'Restore Points' there then??? Bloody waste of time.

Emma left her handbag (complete with wallet) on the bus yesterday, only realising when she was buying stuff at a shop - who were kind enough to ring the bus depot, but to no avail. This morning however, they have it! She's lost her wallet more times than I can remember now and she always manages to get it back fully intact - people sometimes go to amazing trouble to track her down, it's excellent. Once she hadn't even realised she lost it for a few days - we were hanging in the dining room playing cards with the front door open - Emma frowns and says "I wonder where my wallet is?" and no word of a lie, at that very second 2 policemen walk in the open door with her wallet.

Something weird is up with Emma's mobile phone - the alarm has failed to go off friday, monday and today at 4.30am to wake me up for work, but it worked fine for her at 7.30 today - and I set the alarm for both (I even tested it last night at 1am [we were up late], it was fine). At first I thought I was turning it off in my sleep, but no way 3 times in a row - especially as I recall Emma coming to bed last night at 3.30 and I definitely didn't wake up again until just gone 5 when I had to sprint for my backup train. Very annoying, as I've been late for work every time - I'm going to have to buy an alarm clock, which I should have done ages ago (sometimes I forget to reset the alarm for Emma - almost).
