goodbye Yahoo, hello marriage [Aug. 17th, 2008|11:19 pm]
[mood |thoughtfulthoughtful]

So, as of the 1st of August I no longer work for Yahoo! - I quit.

Reason? I'm going to travel with my girlfriend (in 6 weeks - wife) around Australia for a couple of years, living out the back of a van taking photos, writing blogs and books before - in all likelihood - settling down and having kids and not being able to do such things so easily again.

Yahoo! doesn't do sabaticals, so I didn't really have much option other than quit. It was a truly awesome 3 years working for them, they're easily the best company I can imagine working for as an HTML/CSS/Javascript type person (MSN have low standards, Google don't really create many webpages). It has been great - started out as their first webdev in Australia, left having created a brilliant team with exceptionally high coding standards (not to mention - as a team - launching about 80 websites too).

Which all sounds (and is) brilliant, but no longer being an active Yahoo! employee, I find myself somewhat adrift on the web - I now lack the technical sources of information I've relied on for the last 3 years - Yahoo's international developer community was an excellent source and filter of cutting-edge technology information and news for everything I could possibly need, both daily in my inbox and on my every request.

Now I realise I have no incoming information on, well, anything. SEO developments? Nope. HTML 5? Nope. IE8? Nope. Not to mention all the Yahoo! tools and R&D projects I was up until now able to access and rely upon.

I feel like I've left the Navy for a raft and 5 days in realised I have no engines, no sonar, no radio, no crew.

Cripes, I may have to subscribe to *SlashDot*.

spooky radio #5 [Jan. 15th, 2007|02:11 am]
final weirdness post... tried turning the power switch up to 'on' then back down to 'off' thinking that'd surely do it... but nope, made no difference even after multiple tries: radio still on, turntable still spinning.

Pulled the plug out of the wall - finally stopped. Imagine that'll be the staus quo from now on (which will be annoying)

Now there's possums or something outside the window bumping around trying to freak me out... bloody possums. I should go to bed. Radio's still playing, turntable's still turning, power is still off, weirdness continues.

spooky radio #4 [Jan. 15th, 2007|12:05 am]
Tried putting the needle on the record... sound came out of the needle only, not out of the speakers (radio still pumping from there), so nothing too interesting.

The only thing interesting from that experiment is that, having put the needle back on the cradle, the turntable is still spinning - I pretty much expected that action to reset the turntable to the off position, but no... still spinning now.

Spooky spooky spooky spooky spooky.

spooky radio #3 [Jan. 14th, 2007|11:44 pm]
Here's a picture of my spooky radio/turntable in action... note the first switch is down, in the 'off' position. You can't tell from this, but the turntable is turning.

spooky radio turntable

I shot a video too half a minute after it magically came on, but my hosting is down at the moment (that photo is hosted on my flickr account). Did all this with my new camera, got it about a week ago to replace my old tiny l'espion spy-cams that gave up the ghost ages ago. It's a Canon IXUS 60 - rather bigger, but rather better.. and still pocket sized even if not matchbox sized.

For the record, only thing of note today is that it's my last day off work - I've been on holiday since december 22nd as I worked a lot of overtime in the last quarter and Yahoo! were good enough to give me time-in-lieu.

Not done a 'sites launched' in like 10 months, so here we go (and you'll see why I did the overtime, although these are launch dates not start-work date as I imagine that's not something I'm allowed to talk about):

Yahoo!7 News
Yahoo!7 PR site
got promoted to Web Developer Manager, so personal output of sites dropped
Yahoo!7 Homepage (codename:spirit)
Yahoo!7 TV Portal
Yahoo!7 Music
Yahoo!7 Lifestyle Portal which consists of 10 magazine sub-sites:
Marie Claire
Men's Health
New Idea
Better Homes and Gardens
Home Beautiful
TV Hits
Total Girl

spooky radio #2 [Jan. 14th, 2007|11:13 pm]
There's actually a record on the still-spinning turntable... I do believe it's Chemical Brother's "Come With Us" album. Might try and see what happens when I put the needle on, if I'll get both radio and vinyl at once... although Triple-J has moved from Safran/Father Bob to The Sound Lab, which aside from being excellent is electronic/experimental music and sounds, so it may be hard to tell :-)

Fuck, now the cover for my key has just come away from my work laptop. Am I technologically cursed tonight or something?

Also, I'm starting to see little white flashes out of the corner of my left eye (this is getting silly) but I think it's just the rather bright wall light reflecting off my eyelashes.

spooky radio [Jan. 14th, 2007|10:54 pm]
okay WEIRDNESS ALERT! I have a very old radio/turntable in the living room with switches you have to physically move up/down to use them... and at 10:41 exactly, just a few minutes ago, the radio spontaneously turned itself on (the switch is still in the 'off' position) and the turntable is spinning, which it shouldn't be doing anyway as the mode knob is physically set to the RADIO position, not phono.

I wasn't even near it at the time, haven't touched it all day.

It's been 10 minutes, both the radio and turntable are still going now! Spooooky!

Funnily enough "Sunday Night Safran" - the John Safran/Father Bob show on Triple-J - is on, which I love but only ever tune in by accident as I never remember it's on.
